How it works

Start a WhatsApp chat with a scan

The code contains a wa.me link, WhatsApp’s official click-to-chat address, with your number and an optional message. Customers and friends can message you without saving your number or searching for it.

Good uses:

  • Shops and restaurants: orders, reservations and questions.
  • Classifieds: "Is this still available?" pre-written on a for-sale sign.
  • Events and groups: an easy way to get in touch with the organizer.

For a regular text message, use the SMS QR code generator.

Frequently asked questions

What happens when someone scans the code?

WhatsApp opens a chat with your number, with your message in the text box if you added one. The person can edit it and taps Send to start the conversation. They don’t need to save your number first.

Why must I include the country code?

WhatsApp’s chat links only work with the full international number. Enter it as you would from abroad, for example +44 7700 900123; the code uses the digits without the + sign, as WhatsApp requires.

What if the person doesn’t have WhatsApp?

The code is a wa.me link, so without the app it opens a WhatsApp web page that offers to download it or continue in the browser.

Does this work with WhatsApp Business?

Yes. Use the number of your WhatsApp Business account, and add a message such as "Hi, I have a question about…" to help customers get started.
